Discussion on Power Point:
Communication Tool vs. Decision Making Process

Late this past summer I discovered a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article that questioned the effectiveness and value of PowerPoint slides. The initial problem mentioned in the article came from Department of Defense (DoD) slides being too complex or fancy, thus requiring more than normal memory for transmission and storage.

The heart of the article, however, focused on the effectiveness (value) of PowerPoint for Department of Defense (DoD) decision making.

Ten Principles for Meetings Management

  1.  Hold meetings only when absolutely necessary

  2. Use a Meeting Planner (or detailed agenda)

  3. Define the purpose of your meeting

  4. Invite only those people who need to be there and who have something to contribute

  5. Start and end your meetings on time

  6. Fulfill your responsibility (either as a meeting leader or participant) to keep the meeting on track, moving toward the achievement of the purpose

  7. Conduct your meetings with appropriate “people skills”

  8. Identify and follow up on action items

  9. Evaluate the effectiveness of your meetings
